If you are in Yangon between now and March 11th, make sure you don’t miss the opportunity to visit the Secretariat for the Burmese Photographers exhibition from Lukas Birk & The Goethe Institute.
Lukas Birk, the founder of the Myanmar Photo Archives, has collected some 10,000 photographs, taken by both professional and amateur local photographers, dating from 1890 until the current day. Whilst many of the first photos of Myanmar were taken by colonial photographers, his collection allows the viewer to see Myanmar through local eyes, as opposed to the “colonial gaze”.
The exhibition, in the East Wing of the Secretariat is the first initiative from the newly formed Pynisa Rasa artist collective, and the Anawmar Art Group, in using the Secretariat as a space for local arts and cultural displays.
Open Daily, 10am-5pm Until March 11th 2018
